The Gurkha VC-- 11th September 2005

Throughout this year, people across Britain have been remembering the gallant actions of all those who, six decades ago, gave so much that we might be free. This year is the 60th Anniversary of VE/VJ Day.

The Gurkha Durbar in Grayshott, with its strong military connections, was party to that celebration as well, and, last week, hosted the Gurkha VC winner Major Rambahadur Limbu VC MVO for an afternoon of traditional Nepalese "bhat, dahl, tarkari". The Major, one of the thirteen living VC holders, is in England for the annual Victoria and George Cross reunion in London and was invited to the newly opened restaurant to meet old comrades and admiring members of the community.

The proprietor, Major Mani Rai MBE, introduced Major Limbu who then spoke to and was photographed with people at the various tables. All were honoured by his presence and enjoyed the curry lunch, no one more so than the three other officers from his regiment, who served alongside him in the jungles of Borneo: Brigadier Duncan Green, Colonel Charles Wylie and Colonel Jimmy Evans of the 10th Gurkha Rifles. Major Limbu, was accompanied by his wife and two sons, and returns to Nepal this coming Monday having allowed all us to meet a war hero in person.
